No.57 Referenced from ~ Part2 - Chapter 4 - Section 1 Is the Kant problem important?
What kind of problems does the church have with Kant's philosophy? The only thing I can think of is that one of my fellow seminary students converted to Catholicism shortly after graduating. The reason he gave was that he could not get used to the authoritarian atmosphere of the evangelical church. Although it would be hasty to link this to the influence of Kantian philosophy, I feel the same way about the tendency of conservative churches to emphasize authority. It may be controversial to see Kant's influence in the conservative churches, but if we look at the Protestant church as a whole, it is clear that his influence has been very serious. The Protestant church is now split into two factions, the conservative and the mainline. This split is due to Kant. |
