"We can't know, but we can think"

Kant said that the thing-in-itself, the transcendent entity beyond the sensibility and understanding," cannot be known, but can be thought."

The same can be said of Jesus, the entity beyond the Gospels. "Jesus of the historical fact cannot be known with certainty, but he can be thought of", in other words, he cannot be known as the historical Jesus-T with certainty, but he can be thought of as the historical Jesus-R.

Faith based on the historical Jesus-T is "knowledge-dependent," which leads to faith dependent on scholarship. Faith based on the historical Jesus-R is, however, "fact-based", which has a generality that is not bound by historical scholarship.
