No.51 Referenced from ~ Part2 - Chapter 2 - Hard study 5-4-2 The queen's mirror and paradox
The "Liar's Paradox" is similar to the scene in the fairy tale "Snow White" where the queen asks the mirror. The queen asks the mirror, "Who is the most beautiful in the world?" The magic mirror answers the queen's question by saying that the queen is the most beautiful or that Snow White is the most beautiful. One day, however, the mirror becomes an ordinary mirror. The queen, unaware of this, asks the mirror as usual. Who is the most beautiful? The mirror is silent. So she asks again. Who is the most beautiful? The mirror replies, "You are." However, it is not the mirror that answers, but herself reflected in the mirror. The queen continues to ask, but if she says I am beautiful, then the queen is beautiful, and if Snow White is beautiful, then Snow White is beautiful. The mirror's answer is up to her. If the queen realizes that the mirror is no longer a magic mirror, she will no longer find the mirror's answer strange. But as long as she believes that the mirror is a magic mirror, she will remain trapped in the mirror paradox. |
